Description

Our Mayan loofah is sourced from small family farms in Guatemala. It has a naturally open plant-fiber structure and is available in practical lengths for bathing, handmade soap projects and other suitable household uses.

Mayan loofah sizes and thickness

Choose a 5-inch bath-size piece or a larger 10-inch piece. Diameters generally range from approximately 2.5 inches for thinner loofahs to 4.5 inches for wider pieces, and we sort them by thickness. Measurements are approximate because each loofah grows naturally. Color, shape, diameter, density and texture vary from one piece to another.

The 5-inch size is convenient to hold and requires little preparation. The 10-inch size gives you more material and can be cut into shorter sections for different uses. If cutting is needed, work with the loofah while it is dry, using clean, sharp scissors or a suitable knife on a stable surface. Keep your hands clear of the cutting path.

How Mayan loofah compares

Mayan loofahs are generally less dense and more flexible when wet than traditional common loofahs from South-East Asia. That difference can make them appealing for bathing or embedding in handmade soap, but texture preferences are personal. Compressed and expanded loofahs

These loofahs arrive from the farm compressed in bales. We normally reconstitute them by dipping them in water and allowing them to dry in their expanded shape. When a compressed option is offered, it may look flat at first but will open toward its natural form after soaking.

Preparation and care

Before body use, soak the loofah in warm water until it softens. Add soap or body wash and use comfortable, gentle pressure. Rinse thoroughly afterward, squeeze out excess water and let it dry completely in a well-ventilated place. Do not share body-use pieces. Keep household-cleaning pieces separate, and replace a loofah if it develops a persistent odor, discoloration or begins to break down.
