Start with where and how you plan to use it. A whole or cut loofah works well for larger areas of the body. A mitt or handled scrubber is easier to grip and can help reach the back. Small facial pads offer more control, but facial skin is delicate, so use very light pressure and stop if irritation develops. Soap savers and flatter pieces are useful for holding soap or cleaning around the home.
Natural variation is normal. Because loofahs come from plants, their color, shape, density, and texture will not be perfectly uniform. If a new sponge feels firmer than you prefer, soak it in warm water before use and let the water soften the fibers.
Wet the loofah thoroughly, add a small amount of cleanser, and work up a lather. Massage the skin gently instead of scrubbing hard. Rinse the loofah well after every use, squeeze out excess water without twisting aggressively, and hang it in a well-ventilated place where it can dry completely.
Do not share personal-use loofahs. Wash yours regularly according to the care directions for that particular product, and replace it when the fibers break down, it develops an odor, or it no longer dries cleanly between uses.
A damp loofah can hold residue and microorganisms, so drying matters as much as rinsing. Avoid leaving it on a wet shower floor or in a closed container. Use gentle pressure, and do not use a body loofah on broken, sunburned, freshly shaved, or irritated skin. People with very sensitive skin or a skin condition should ask a qualified healthcare professional whether physical exfoliation is appropriate for them.
They can be a useful physical exfoliator when softened with water and used gently. More pressure is not better; the goal is to lift surface buildup without leaving the skin sore or red.
Your skin and the product texture should guide you. Begin conservatively rather than using it aggressively every day, and reduce use if you notice dryness or irritation.
Rinse away soap and debris after each use, remove excess water, and let it dry fully in open air. Follow the product-specific cleaning directions and replace it whenever it smells musty or shows deterioration.
No. A natural loofah is the dried fibrous interior of a luffa gourd, while a natural sea sponge comes from the ocean. They have different textures and care needs.
