Description

This South Korean loofah, also called Susemi Oi, is a natural plant-fiber sponge grown on family farms in South Korea. The mature loofah gourds are harvested, peeled and dried to create the fibrous structure used for bathing, soap making and other suitable household uses.

Choose a South Korean loofah size

  • 5-inch bath size: a compact piece that is convenient to hold and requires little preparation.
  • 12–14-inch full length: an uncut loofah that can be used whole or divided into several custom-size sections.

Exact length, diameter, color, shape and fiber density vary because each loofah is naturally grown. Those differences are normal rather than manufacturing defects.

What does Susemi Oi mean?

Susemi Oi is a Korean name associated with the loofah gourd and is sometimes translated as “scrubbing cucumber.” The dried plant fiber feels firm when dry and becomes softer and more flexible after it is thoroughly soaked.

How to prepare and use it

Soak the loofah in warm water until the fibers open and soften. Add soap or body wash and begin with light pressure, adjusting only to a level that feels comfortable. Texture preferences vary, and a natural loofah may feel too firm for some sensitive areas. Avoid using it on broken or irritated skin.

If you cut the full-length size, work while the loofah is dry. Use clean, sharp scissors or a suitable knife on a stable surface and keep your hands clear of the cutting path. Keep pieces intended for household cleaning separate from anything used on the body.

Rinsing, drying and replacement

Rinse thoroughly after each use, squeeze out excess water without twisting aggressively and allow the loofah to dry completely in a well-ventilated place. Do not share a body-use loofah. Replace it if it develops a persistent odor, discoloration or begins to break down.
