Choose a whole common loofah in the length that fits how you plan to use it. These natural loofahs are imported from South-East Asia and sold in their raw, unflattened form, so you receive the familiar cylindrical shape rather than a pressed pad.

Choose the right loofah size

Available lengths are 4, 6, 12 and 18 inches. The 4-inch and 6-inch sizes are convenient for bathing, body care, crafts or adding to handmade soap. The 12-inch and 18-inch loofahs give you more material to divide into several useful pieces. Cut one section for soap making, another for bathing and a separate piece for household cleaning.

Because this is a natural plant product, diameter, color, density and texture vary from one loofah to another. Those differences are normal and make every piece unique. If you prefer a compact piece that is ready to use with little or no cutting, select a shorter length.

How to prepare and use a raw loofah

If you want smaller sections, cut the loofah while it is dry using clean, sharp scissors or a suitable knife on a stable surface. Keep your hands clear of the cutting path. If cutting a large loofah is uncomfortable, choose one of the smaller sizes instead.

Before using a section on your body, soak it in warm water until it softens. Add soap or body wash, use gentle pressure and rinse well afterward. Let it dry completely between uses in a well-ventilated place. Do not share a body-use loofah, and replace it if it develops an odor, discoloration or begins to break down.
